about

Tracy sourced this song from a recording of Dublin folk singer, Al O’Donnell, on his ‘Ramble Away’ album. The song comes from an English translation of an 18th century poem written by County Fermanagh poet, Cathal Buí Mac Giolla Ghunna. The song laments a yellow bittern (An Bonnán Buí) that died of thirst. However, it is said the words reflect Mac Giolla Ghunna’s own drinking habits. The moral of the story suggests that you should drink your fill while you still can, or you too might well meet your maker just like the poor old Bonnán Buí!
